Greek Wedding Traditions You’ll Want to Include in Your Ceremony

If you’re planning a destination wedding in Greece, adding a few authentic Greek traditions can make your celebration even more meaningful, beautiful—and fun!

At Evental, many of our couples want to honor Greek culture (even if they’re not Greek themselves), and we love helping them blend timeless customs into modern, stylish weddings. Whether you want just a symbolic nod or the full experience, here are our favorite Greek wedding traditions to inspire you.

The Stefana (Wedding Crowns)
One of the most iconic elements in a Greek Orthodox wedding is the use of stefana—two delicate crowns joined by a ribbon. These crowns symbolize unity, eternity, and the couple's bond as king and queen of their new life together.

They’re placed on the couple’s heads during the ceremony and swapped three times by the koumbaros (best man) or koumbara (maid of honor). You can choose traditional gold or silver crowns, or even custom-made ones to match your wedding aesthetic.

Modern twist: Even in non-religious ceremonies, stefana can be used in a symbolic blessing.

The Koumbaros / Koumbara Role

In Greek weddings, this role is much more than a best friend or family member—it’s an honor. The koumbaros or koumbara acts as a witness, a spiritual sponsor, and someone who supports your marriage throughout your life.

They usually help with the ceremony, sometimes even buying the stefana and candles.

Tip: If you're blending cultures, consider honoring both traditions by having a koumbaros and a maid of honor/best man.

The Dance of Isaiah (Ceremonial Walk)

After the exchange of rings and crowns, the priest leads the couple in a ceremonial walk around the altar table—known as the Dance of Isaiah—to symbolize their first steps together as husband and wife.

Fun fact: It’s a beautiful photo moment, too.

Plate Smashing & Dancing the Night Away

Let’s be honest: this is the part everyone gets excited about! Smashing plates is an old Greek tradition said to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. While it’s less common now (and often symbolic), many couples still do it for fun—especially at the reception.

Pair it with traditional Greek dancing like the Kalamatianos or Sirtaki and your guests will never forget your wedding night.

Pro tip: Let us coordinate a dance instructor for your guests—it’s always a hit!

Greek Wedding Treats: Koufeta & More

Greek weddings are known for their sweets, especially koufeta—sugar-coated almonds wrapped in tulle or placed in small boxes for guests. They represent the bittersweet nature of life: sugar for the sweet times, almond for the challenges.

We also love incorporating:

  • Melomakarona (honey cookies)

  • Baklava

  • Traditional liqueurs like mastiha or ouzo
